Lawyer Fees
Miami, FL: (Jan-30-08) Jacqueline Huggett, the widow of late Bill Huggett, brought a lawsuit against Jay Wingate, a former associate of the Huggett Law Firm, alleging that she was owed money from the fees received in cases left behind by her husband. Sources stated that the death of Bill Huggett in 2004 sparked a legal row over his case portfolio. His wife accused Wingate of looting the firm of money and clients. Sources close to the case said that the two parties had reached a settlement, resolving the long-standing dispute.
The settlement agreement, recently made public, showed that Wingate agreed to withdraw from 77 cases filed against the Royal Carribean Cruise Lines. Court records reveal that Royal Carribean had petitioned a judge to toss Wingate from the cases, alleging his new firm paid off a cruise line employee for inside information about the company's legal strategy. It also ensured that Jacqueline Huggett gets her share of any fees in the cases when they are assigned to another lawyer. The Miami-Dade Circuit Court stated that the Wingate Firm has turned over $2.5 million to Jacqueline Huggett as her share of cases originated by her husband. [LAW.COM: LAWYER FEES]
