Nightclub Fire
Providence, RI: (Feb-01-08) A lawsuit was brought against WPRI-TV, a TV station, and Brian Butler, a cameraman, alleging that Butler's filming at a night club impeded the crowd's exit through the front door when the club was on fire. The suit was filed by dozens of people and companies, after the fire at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, RI took the lives of 100 people. Sources stated that the blaze started on Feb. 20, 2003, after pyrotechnics used by a rock band, Great White, ignited foam that was used as soundproofing. Sources close to the case stated that Brian Butler, who worked for WPRI-TV, was at the nightclub gathering videotape for a segment on safety in public places.
As part of a settlement reached, the TV station, owned by LIN Television Corporation, agreed to a tentative $30 million payout to the survivors of the fire and relatives of those who died. Records show that in 2007, lawyers reached settlements totaling $18.5 million with a handful of the defendants. Civil cases related to the fire are pending. The criminal case was resolved in 2006 through plea deals with the three men charged. [NEW YORK TIMES: NIGHTCLUB FIRE]
