Inmate Rape
Detroit, MI: (Feb-01-08) Ten female inmates brought a lawsuit against the Michigan Department of Corrections in 1996, alleging that they were raped and sexually harassed by male staff in a Michigan state prison. Sources state that the Washtenaw case was the first trial ever in Michigan concerning the issue of female prisoners being sexually abused by guards and others. Lawyers claim that there are another 490 women with cases, who could be tried, 10 at a time. Sources close to the case stated that after three weeks of testimony, a jury awarded $15 million to the 10 female inmates, resolving the inmate abuse lawsuit. It is estimated that once interest is factored in, the women could get about $30 million. City officials claimed that the state Department of Corrections plans to appeal.
