TouchPlay Revenue
Cedar Rapids, IA: (Feb-4-08) Larry Elbert, the owner of Camden Inc. of Cedar Rapids, brought a lawsuit against the state over losses at the state lottery's TouchPlay games. Camden sued the state in June 2006 after more than 6,700 TouchPlay machines were removed from more than 3,000 bars, restaurants, and convenience stores. After authorizing the creation of TouchPlay in 2002, state lawmakers reversed their decision four years later in response to residents' complaints that the rapid spread of the machines, whose play resembled video slot machines, amounted to an expansion of gambling in Iowa. Records show that after Camden filed its suit seeking to recoup $2 million in losses because of the game's sudden cancellation, the Iowa Lottery filed a counterclaim for $497,963 in TouchPlay revenues the company failed to forward to the state.
Officials on both sides said that the parties had reached a settlement agreement, in which the state will pay Camden $1.05 million. It also will pay another $280,000 to Great America Distributing to satisfy that firm's claim against Camden in a pending Polk County case. Following the deal, both parties agreed to drop their claims. The state agreed in August 2007 to pay $1.67 million to another TouchPlay vendor Royal Financial, the largest single operator when the games were banned. [THE GAZETTE: TOUCHPLAY REVENUE]
