Ford SUV Accident
San Antonio, TX: (Feb-4-08) The mother of Ruben Zamora, a 41-year-old man, brought a lawsuit against Ford Motor Co., the second-largest US automaker, after he was left brain damaged in a 2004 rollover accident involving an Explorer SUV. Records show that Zamora lost control of the 1993 Explorer when a tire lost its tread, and he was injured after being ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over. Zamora, a disabled oil field worker before the accident, was injured in August 2004 while driving near San Antonio, leaving him with severe brain damage, where he will need someone to take care of him for the rest of his life. Zamora had been using the shoulder portion of the belt, which had been modified by a previous owner of the Explorer. The suit claimed that the tread separation set off vibrations in the rear of the vehicle that made it skate sideways because of a defect in the SUV's suspension.
Court officials stated that the state court jury found the Explorer defective and awarded $10 million. Sources said that the jury found that Zamora was 35% responsible for the accident, leaving a verdict of $6.5 million against Ford. Following the personal injury suits, Ford sold 137,817 Explorers in 2007, a 23% decline from 2006. Ford sold more than 400,000 Explorers in 2002. [MY SAN ANTONIO: FORD SUV ACCIDENT]
