Fired Police Chief
Jackson, FL: (Feb- 4-08) William Nelson, former chief of police, brought a lawsuit against the city of Sneads, claiming that he was wrongfully terminated from his job in late 2000. In his suit, Nelson alleged that the city violated Florida's Government in the Sunshine laws when the town council fired him during a special meeting. He alleged the public was not given proper notice before the meeting took place.
The suit, slated to go to trial, reached an out-of-court settlement in which the city agreed to pay William Nelson a total of $35,000. City officials claimed that the settlement amount will be paid through its insurance provider. Of the total, Nelson will get $10,000, while $25,000 goes to his legal team. Separate checks were cut for Nelson and his lawyers, according to Sneads City Manager Ed Kilpatrick. Following the deal, Nelson stated that he was satisfied with the outcome and that the lawsuit was not about the money, but the principle. [JACKSON COUNTY FLORIDAN: FIRED POLICE CHIEF]
