Personal Property Taxes
Romeo, MI: (Feb-13-08) Ford Motor Company brought charges against Macomb County groups, alleging that they owed the company money that it overcharged on personal property taxes. The suit resulted when Ford checked its taxing records and found it had paid personal property taxes twice from 1998 to 2001. After numerous discussions with local municipalities, Ford reached agreements on the amounts owed. Since Ford leases a lot of its equipment, one of the leasing companies sent in an audit for the assessor, but then Ford sent one in as well. Reportedly, Bruce Township's assessor recorded both, causing a double payment.
Sources close to the case stated that as part of an agreement reached by the parties, the village of Romeo's settlement amount is more than $1.2 million. Records show that contracts with Ford were signed on Feb. 6, stating the village owes $1,263,192 of refund allocation within the next four years. Village Clerk Marian McLaughlin said half of that amount must be paid by 2008, while the other half would be paid in the following two years. [ROMEO OBSERVER: PROPERTY TAXES]
