Airport Security
Jackson County, OR: (Feb-14-08) Lynda Longfellow, a former airport parking enforcement officer, brought a lawsuit against Jackson County, alleging that she was fired in retaliation to her blowing the whistle on eight Medford airport security workers, who were asleep while on duty. Longfellow, a Butte Falls resident, raised other issues about airport security, including suspicions that security personnel may have used drugs or alcohol on the job. She also said some workers did not have the proper training. Two airport security personnel were fired for sleeping on the job and another was fired after stealing a laptop computer. County officials stated that Longfellow was fired for misconduct.
Sources close to the case stated that the parties had reached a settlement, in which Longfellow was awarded $200,000. Records show that Longfellow had won a whistleblower lawsuit in US District Court in 2006, in which a jury awarded Longfellow a judgment of $365,000 for emotional damages. However, Judge Owen Panner decided the damage award was too much and lowered it to $60,000 in February 2007. The deal reached with Jackson County and Medford airport Director Bern Case brings to a conclusion the legal wrangling after she was fired in July 2005. [MAIL TRIBUNE: AIRPORT WHISTLEBLOWER]
