Contract Extortion
This is a settlement for the Commercial lawsuit.
Hudson County, NJ: (Feb-18-08) Hudson County brought a lawsuit against former County Executive Robert Janiszewski and the bonding company that covered him, after the county lost $26.8 million to corruption. Records show that Janiszewski served for 13 years as county executive before abruptly leaving in September 2001; he later admitted to extorting money from vendors for government contracts. In March 2005, he was sentenced to a 41-month jail term. During the long standing litigation, US District Court Judge Joel Pisano tossed out the county's civil case, limiting the amount it could collect from the bonding company because the county failed to file before the statute of limitations expired. Pisano said the county should have known about Janiszewski's racketeering scheme when he left office, giving them until September 2005 to take action. The lawsuit wasn't filed until Jan. 23, 2006. Sources close to the case revealed that a settlement had been reached in the case, in which Hudson County collected a $650,000 settlement from former County Executive Robert Janiszewski.
