Serial Killer
Newark, NJ: (Feb-19-08) The families of serial killer Charles Cullen's victims, brought lawsuits against the hospitals that once employed the former registered nurse, alleging wrongful death. Sources close to the case stated that Cullen was arrested in 2003 on suspicion that he murdered several patients at Somerset Medical Center, and he later pleaded guilty to using stolen medications to kill 29 patients in hospitals in NJ and PA and attempting to kill six others. The suit against the hospitals was filed by the families of 23 victims, who claimed in state Superior Court, that the hospitals should have known Cullen was a killer and should have done more to protect patients from him.
In a recent development in the suit, sources reported that the families of the deceased patients reached a settlement with Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, Warren Hospital in Phillipsburg, Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township, and St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, PA. Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, the only hospital where Cullen did not admit to harming a patient, was not involved in the settlement. The terms of the settlement were kept confidential.
