Used Tire Storage
Chicago, IL: (Feb-19-08) The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) brought charges against Branko Vardijan, the owner of Sheridan Sand and Gravel Co., alleging that he improperly stored hundreds of tires on his company's property. The suit was filed after a Jun. 6, 2005 inspection revealed that about 500 used tires were found filled with contaminated water in uncovered steel boxes and semitrailers. During a second inspection, the tires had been removed. Nonetheless, the Illinois Attorney General's office filed a complaint against the company. Vardijan, of Lake Forest, also owns Ravenswood Disposal Service in Chicago.
As part of a settlement reached, the owner of Sheridan Sand and Gravel Co. agreed to pay a $10,000 fine. Vardijan recently signed a proposed settlement in which he does not admit he committed any violations, but agreed to the settlement to avoid the cost of litigation. IEPA officials said that Vardijan did not gain economic benefit from the tire storage, he diligently removed the tires once notified of the problem and he had no prior violations.
