Teacher Student Abuse
Beaufort County, SC: (Feb-20-08) A sexual abuse victim brought a lawsuit against the Beaufort County Board of Education, alleging that he was abused by former teacher Philip Underwood-Sheppard. Records show that Underwood-Sheppard was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2003 for molesting at least nine students ages 6 to 13 from 1999 to 2002. He is being held in Ridgeland Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison in Ridgeland. Sources close to the case stated that a settlement has been reached between the parties in which the Beaufort County Board of Education voted to pay $300,000 to resolve the suit. School sources stated that State law limits any settlement award to a single person from a public entity to $300,000 in a liability case. Though the district paid more than $600,000 on average to the other victims, those payouts also covered claims made by the parents.
