Biodefense Program
College station, TX: (Feb-21-08) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention brought charges against Texas A&M University, following an investigation that revealed safety and sanitation lapses and other problems in its biodefense program. The suit claimed that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigated A&M after a worker became infected with Brucella in 2006 and three others were exposed to Q fever. Both diseases, highly contagious in animals, can cause high fever and flulike symptoms in humans. The inspection showed that there were problems such as missing Brucella vials, unauthorized workers with access to infectious diseases, and improper storage of dangerous agents and infected animals. They also reported an apparent insect infestation and lab workers failing to wash their hands or remove lab coats immediately after experiments. As part of a settlement reached, sources revealed that the Texas A&M University agreed to pay $1 million to settle the investigation, ending litigation.
