School Racism
New Providence, NJ: (Mar-04-08) An African American family brought a lawsuit against the New Providence School District, alleging that their daughter underwent years of racial harassment at the school. The lawsuit was filed in 2005 on behalf of Tara Fogg and her parents, claiming that both Tara and her older brother Tremayne, who also attended the school, were subjected to instances of cruel and vicious, racially motivated, harassment at the hands of fellow students. The parents stated that they initiated the lawsuit, not so much for any monetary award, but the principle of the matter. They claimed that the school was negligent in handling the case and did not support the two siblings. They stated that they hoped that no student at New Providence High School, or any other high school, will have to endure any level of bullying or harassment.
As part of a settlement reached, the New Providence School District agreed to pay the family $250,000 to resolve the racial harassment lawsuit. Under the settlement, there were no findings or admissions by school officials regarding the incidents alleged by the family. School board President Ira Krauss said the settlement was reached by the district's insurance company and that the board was not consulted on the decision to settle. He also rejected the allegations in the lawsuit. [
