Natural Gas Explosion
Saratoga Springs, NY: (Mar-05-08) Greg Roper, a Saratoga Springs man, brought a lawsuit against Questar Gas, after his wife died in an explosion. The wrongful death lawsuit stated that a gas leak caused an explosion in their home in 2007, killing Roper's wife, April, and Questar employee Larry Radford.
Investigations revealed that the explosion occurred due to a leak in a Questar pipeline, when a telephone line was being buried in the Roper's neighborhood. Roper's attorney, Colin King, said Questar employees should not have allowed April Roper to enter her house and that Questar should have ensured that all ignition sources were extinguished and that the house was clear of natural gas.
A settlement was reached in the lawsuit, which named the four companies that caused the gas leak as defendants, in which Questar agreed to pay an undisclosed, seven-figure payment to Roper, resolving allegations. The cash settlement will be paid out to Greg Roper, April Roper's parents, and the couple's 2-year-old daughter. Additionally, as part of the settlement agreement, Questar Gas agreed to change some of its procedures for handling underground gas leaks.
