Medicare Fraud
Newark, NJ: (Mar-06-08) The US Department of Justice brought a lawsuit against Besler & Co. Inc., a North Brunswick, NJ health care consulting firm and its principal, Philip Besler, alleging that they defrauded the federal Medicare program. The suit stated that Besler & Co. Inc. and Philip Besler engaged in Medicare fraud between January 2001 and August 2003, by advising hospitals to purposefully inflate charges for inpatient and outpatient care. They also made cases appear more costly than they actually were in order to get outlier, or supplemental reimbursements.
As part of a settlement reached in the case, Besler & Co. Inc. and Philip Besler, have agreed to pay the United States $2.875 million plus interest to resolve allegations. The Justice Department claimed that this was the second NJ, based company that has agreed to a multi-million-dollar payment to settle Medicare fraud charges. Earlier, the federal agency announced that Newark-based Cathedral Healthcare System Inc., had agreed to pay the United States $5.3 million plus interest to settle allegations that it defrauded the federal Medicare program. Besler did not admit to the allegations in agreeing to settle. [NJ BIZ: NJ FIRM TO PAY $2.9M TO RESOLVE FRAUD CHARGES]
