Bullied Schoolboy

Meriden, CT: (Mar-08-08) Judith Scruggs, a Meriden woman, brought a federal lawsuit against Meriden school officials, after her son committed suicide. The suit claimed that the boy took his life after being bullied by classmates. Prosecutors said filthy living conditions in the Scrugg's home led to his death and records show that Judith Scruggs had been convicted in 2003 of risk of injury to a minor, a year after her son J. Daniel Scruggs hanged himself in his closet. However, the state Supreme Court overturned the Scrugg's conviction in 2006. Scruggs maintained that her son's suicide was because classmates kicked and punched her 12-year-old son and made fun of bad breath and body odor. The boy had started sleeping in his closet with knives out of fear.

Sources stated that the parties had reached a settlement in the case, in which both sides agreed to dismiss the case but would not elaborate on details. The finer terms of the agreement, including financial details are being kept confidential. The case is said to have inspired a new state law requiring schools to report bullies to authorities, and many school districts have revamped bullying policies following the lawsuit's settlement.
