Principal Matters
Baldwin, KS: (Mar-12-08) Allen Poplin, former Baldwin High School principal, brought a lawsuit against the Baldwin School District, alleging that he was discriminated against, which was a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Records showed that the board voted 6-1 three years ago to non-renew Poplin's contract. He took over as principal at BHS in the late 1990s after serving as assistant principal for years.
Under the terms of the deal, Poplin settled for $42,000. He had originally sought in excess of $1 million. The Baldwin School Board approved the settlement and stated that the district's insurance company, AMCO, will pay $21,000 and the district will pay the remaining. The settlement states the district denies any liability in Poplin's claims, but has settled to avoid the costs and risks associated with litigation.
