Microsoft Spam
New York, NY: (Mar-12-08) Microsoft Corp. brought charges against Scott Richter, dethroned spam king, alleging that he engaged in sending illegal and deceptive email as part of business practices. The lawsuit was a joint effort of Microsoft and New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who reached a settlement with Richter for $50,000. The suit claimed that when charges were originally filed, it was estimated that Richter was responsible for as much as 38 billion spam messages per year.
In a recent development in the case, sources stated that the parties had reached a settlement agreement, in which Scott Richter has agreed to pay $7 million to Microsoft to resolve allegations. Brad Smith, Microsoft General Counsel, stated that Microsoft plans to devote $5 million of the settlement to increasing their Internet enforcement efforts and an additional million will be paid to New York State through Microsoft Unlimited Potential donations.
