Arab-American Fired
This is a settlement for the Discrimination lawsuit.
Mendocino, CA: (Mar-13-08) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) brought a lawsuit against owners of the Albion River Inn restaurant, alleging that it discriminated against Abdellatiff Hadji, former restaurant manager. The commission brought the charges on behalf of Abdellatiff Hadji, an Arab American restaurant manager of Moroccan descent, alleging that his services were terminated in retaliation to his complaining about a long-time customer's harassment. The customer continually harassed one of the waiters, using expletives and derogatory terms.
When the customer and his wife, who were staying at the inn while celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary, returned to the restaurant, Hadji approached the man, expressing his concern over the manner in which the waiter was treated. The suit claimed that following that, the inn's management insisted that Hadji provide the customer with a written apology or resign. When Hadji refused to apologize to the customer, he was terminated. The commission said that an employer who validates this type of harassment by a customer is in violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Retaliating against an employee who opposes harassment is also illegal.
As part of a settlement reached, owners of the Albion River Inn restaurant agreed to pay Hadji $165,000 to resolve the workplace discrimination lawsuit. [THE MENDOCINO BEACON: INN AGREES TO DISCRIMINATION LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT]
