Murder Suicide
Colorado Springs, CO: (Mar-16-08) Donald Rifkin, a Colorado Springs man, brought charges against Memorial Hospital after his wife shot and killed their sons and then herself, after being released from the hospital. The wrongful death suit claimed that the hospital was negligent in the treatment of Julie Rifkin, 41, who was admitted at Memorial Hospital on Apr. 22, 2005, after telling a co-worker she thought she would get a gun and kill herself and her sons. The hospital treated and released Julie Rifkin, only to find two days later, the bodies of Rifkin and the couple's 12-year-old son, Gabriel in their home. Thirteen-year-old Nathan was shot in the head and died later that day.
Sources stated that the parties had reached a settlement, in which Memorial Hospital agreed to pay Donald Rifkin $325,000. Additionally, under the deal, both parties agreed to bear their own legal costs. Other details were not disclosed. Rifkin has since remarried and lives in South Carolina.
