Medicare Theft
Tampa, FL: (mar-18-08) The Justice Department's Civil Division, Commercial Litigation Branch and the US Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida brought a lawsuit against Acculab Laboratories and its owner, Joseph T. DeGregorio, alleging that the facility submitted false claims to Medicare. The lawsuit accused the company of submitting claims to Medicare for laboratory services that were not ordered. The fraud was carried out at the direction of DeGregorio, who billed the federal program for services that were not provided, were not medically necessary or were improperly unbundled. The lawsuit stemmed from a whistleblower complaint, which was filed by a private citizen against Acculab.
As part of a settlement reached, sources stated that Acculab Laboratories and its owner, DeGregorio, will pay the $461,000 to resolve the Medicare fraud allegations. Reports revealed that the whistleblower will receive a $92,200 reward. [TAMPA BAY BUSINESS JOURNAL: SARASOTA LAB FINED FOR FALSE MEDICARE CLAIMS]
