Residents Receive Refund

Watertown, CT: (Mar-20-08) The Watertown Fire District brought a lawsuit against the Town of Watertown, alleging that the town overcharged the district for sewage services since 2001. Sources close to the case stated that the two sides have reached a settlement agreement, in which the Town of Watertown agreed to pay $996,485 to resolve allegations. Following the deal, officials stated that residents could have their refund checks as soon as April 30, 2008.

The settlement agreement states that motor vehicle and personal property tax is not included in this assessment because throughout the entire period through June 30, 2007, real property tax also paid for streetlights, hydrants, and zoning. Real property, motor vehicle and personal property comprise the three components of property taxes. City sources said that not all residents living in Watertown during this time period will receive a rebate, due to the fact that only sewer customers living in Watertown as of March 1, 2008 will be entitled to it.
