County Workers Harassed

Duluth, MS: (Mar-20-08) A St. Louis County employee brought a lawsuit against the county, alleging sexual harassment against another employee. County officials stated that all parties haven't signed off on an agreement that was reached, towards paying the plaintiff $35,000 to resolve allegations. The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission made known to the county of a claim of discrimination being made by the employee, and in July 25, 2008, the EEOC notified the county it had determined the employee was subjected to a hostile work environment caused by sexual harassment and intimidation.

County sources stated that the payment in the case will come from the county's tort liability account, which a few years ago allegedly had $2.5 million in it. This settlement is said to come out of the property taxes that county held. Sources said that the settlement was the fallout of hours spent in closed session, where the County Board voted unanimously for the payment. The case centered on the Sheriff's Department personnel at the St. Louis County Jail in Duluth, where a woman employee claimed harassment by a male employee. The case gained momentum because the County Board was notified in early 2007 of the matter. [MESABI DAILY NEWS: HARASSMENT SETTLEMENT CLAIM TO COST $35,000]
