Anti Gay Violence
Platteville, WI: (Mar-24-08) Brett Timmerman, an openly gay former college student, brought a lawsuit against a man who attacked him with anti-gay slogans, appealing to Wisconsin's hate crime law, which provides special damages for victims of violence on the basis of sexual orientation. The suit stated that Timmerman, who was at the time a student at University of Wisconsin -Platteville, was about to walk into a local sandwich shop when his would-be attackers called him a 'faggot' and told him to take his 'faggot-ass back to Madison.' After the verbal abuse, Timmerman was slapped and spat upon before being tackled to the ground by the neck, resulting in a ruptured eardrum . The suit was filed in the Circuit Court of Grant County, WI in September 2006 on Timmerman's behalf.
Sources close to the case stated that as part of a settlement agreement reached between the parties; Brett Timmerman was awarded an undisclosed sum of money. His legal counsel stated that they were relieved that Brett would be compensated for the emotional and physical injuries he suffered. They said it was the first time the civil provision in the hate crime law has resulted in a settlement of an anti-gay violence case [PRIDE SOURCE: SETTLEMENT FOR UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN STUDENT]
