Student Rent Control
Lafayette, NJ: (Mar-25-08) Several college students living off campus brought a lawsuit against Dave Adams, the landlord of three properties with two located on Prosper Street and one on Lafayette Street, alleging that he overcharged the students, violating the city's rent control ordinance establishing fair rent levels. The suit was resolved after the parties reached a settlement agreement, in which Dave Adams agreed to pay $15,000 to resolve allegations.
Sources stated that the settlement will be paid into a specially established trust fund over a 90-day period, the last of three payments due June 1, 2008. Legal counsel for Adams stated that Adams is a respected landlord, and this was a one-time problem. They claimed that their client has no ill feelings toward the tenants involved in the litigation and would continue to rent to them.
