Municipal Water Filtration
Kingston, NY: (Mar-26-08) The city of Kingston brought a lawsuit against Charles A. Manganaro Consulting Engineers of NJ, alleging that it provided a faulty design for a water-filtration system. The suit was brought in 1999 in US District Court in Albany, in which the city accused the engineering company of providing faulty designs for eight filters used at Kingston's Edmund T. Cloonan water treatment plant in Woodstock. City officials said that Kingston draws most of its water from Cooper Lake in Woodstock. City officials said that Water Department employees were able to make adjustments to keep the water clean but that the inconvenience could've been avoided if the Manganaro firm had designed the filters correctly. The suit sought half of the amount, though cost of installing the filters was $838,000, because the engineering firm did half of the design work properly.
Sources stated that the two sides had reached a settlement, in which Charles A. Manganaro Consulting Engineers agreed to pay the city $750,000 to resolve allegations. Sources claimed that the settlement was significantly larger than the amount in the lawsuit because of inflation in the years since the suit was filed.
