Customer's Personal Information
Houston, TX: (Mar-26-08) State Attorney General Gregg Abbott brought charges against 20 CVS Pharmacy stores across Houston, over policies pertaining to customer identity theft. The suit stemmed from an incident in 2006, where prescription labels, pill bottles and computer print outs containing detailed personal medical information of customers were found improperly disposed in unsecured dumpsters of CVS stores in and around Houston.
Abbott stated that as part of state law, businesses across the state of Texas were obligated to shred or otherwise make unreadable personal identifying information of their consumers. The investigators on the case said that they found prescriptions for everything, from allergy medicines to anti-psychotic drugs.
Sources on both sides confirmed that the parties had reached a settlement agreement, in which CVS has agreed to pay the state $315,000 and put stringent safeguards in place to protect the identity of its customers. Following the settlement, the Attorney General has also set up a Web site to help consumers prevent identity theft. [CLICK 2 HOUSTON: AG REACHES SETTLEMENT OVER DISCARDED PERSONAL INFORMATION]
