Sewage Floods Home
Richmond, VA: (Mar-26-08) Dan Nicholson and Beth White, a Battery Park couple, brought a property damage lawsuit against the city of Richmond, over flooding that ruined their home. The suit claimed that the couple's home was destroyed in September 2006 by sewage-fouled floodwaters during Tropical Storm Ernesto. City officials stated that the city agreed to resolve the lawsuit shortly before it was to go to trial, seeking to avoid the costs and risks of litigation.
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, the city paid the Battery Park couple $200,000 to resolve allegations. City sources claimed that the city paid the family $180,000 for the house and $20,000 for lost belongings. The city will demolish the house and incorporate the property into an expanded park. Richmond Mayor L. Douglas Wilder said that the deal marks the end of Richmond's recovery from the Battery Park flooding. He said that similar disasters will be prevented in the future by the completion of a new sewer line last year that was financed primarily federal and state disaster relief.
