Police Dog Causes Accident
Ogden, UT: (Apr-01-08) Mary Frances Stone brought a personal injury lawsuit against the city of Ogden, after a police dog put a pickup truck into gear, severely injuring her. The suit stated that Stone, 43, was on her way to check her mailbox, when a 1990 Ford pickup truck assigned to Officer Taylor Finder, started toward her, hitting her in July 2006.
Allegedly, the police stated that Ranger, a German shepherd, was in the bed of the idling truck, and came on to the front seat through a sliding door and put the automatic transmission into gear. Police officials stated that Finder and other officers were responding to a call in Stone's neighborhood when the disaster struck. The accident resulted in Stone's sustaining a broken pelvis. Stone filed suit, seeking $580,000 in damages.
Sources stated that the two sides had reached a settlement, in which the city agreed to pay $300,000 to resolve the personal injury claim. According to court records, Finder wasn't disciplined. He declined to comment on the settlement. City officials said that the settlement amount will be paid by its insurer.
