Road Rage Insanity
Fayetteville, AR: (Apr-01-08) Gary Weller, the former Pine Forest High School football coach, brought a lawsuit against the city of Fayetteville, after he was the victim of a road rampage. The suit, filed in 2007, stated that Weller was nearly killed in a hit-and-run incident involving a stolen city van in April 2004. His suit alleged that the city was negligent, as an employee had left the van running and unlocked when it was stolen at a maintenance lot.
In its defense, the city denied any liability, though it did agree to resolve the lawsuit by entering into a settlement. Under the terms of the settlement agreement, the city agreed to a $250,000 payout to Weller. The man driving the van was Abdullah El-Amin Shareef, who was captured and charged with murder and attempted murder and related charges in the rampage that killed one man and injured three other people. Shareef, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in March 2007 and now is said to be at Dorothea Dix mental hospital, where he is being held for treatment of an unspecified mental illness.
