Baking Soda Kills Girl
Pittsburg, CA: (Apr-02-08) The parents of Deonna Green, a 2-year-old Pittsburg girl, brought a wrongful death lawsuit against Contra Costa County, after the toddler died eating baking soda while in the care of her foster mother. Mikisa Boone and Marvin Green sued the county in May 2007, accusing the county of negligence, alleging that social workers failed to take action after the girl lost a significant amount of weight before her death.
Green died in 2006 at Children's Hospital Oakland, where medical authorities stated the cause of death to be sodium bicarbonate intoxication as a result of eating baking soda. County officials claimed that they could not file charges against the child's foster mother, Khareasha Pugh; because prosecutors stated that they couldn't prove criminal negligence.
In a recent development in the case, a settlement was reached in which the Contra Costa County has approved a $300,000 payout to the girl's parents, Mikisa Boone and Marvin Green, resolving the wrongful death suit. [KCRA 3 NEWS: BAKING SODA DEATH CASE ENDS IN SETTLEMENT]
