Stolen Stop Sign Causes Death
Tallahassee, FL: (Apr-03-08) Lisa Freeman-Salazar and Andy Salazar brought a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, after their 5-year-old daughter, Alexandria, died in a traffic accident. The suit accused the city of failing to replace a stolen stop sign, a factor that contributed to the accident, resulting in her death, on October 2004 at Seventh Avenue South and H Street.
Sources close to the case stated that the Lake Worth family is close to receiving the full $500,000 settlement in the case. In a recent development, the Senate Community Affairs Committee approved paying the couple the remaining $342,000 settlement. The legislators went against a recommendation of a Senate legal adviser. The case had staggered after attorneys suggested not approving the extra dollars, claiming Alexandria was not wearing a seat belt and was in the front seat, which may have contributed to her death.
Court records indicate the family had earlier received more than $200,000 from insurance claims and a settlement with manufacturer of the minivan involved in the crash. The city had paid out $200,000, of which $157,000 went to the Salazar family. [PALM BEACH POST: SETTLEMENT IN LAKE WORTH GIRL'S DEATH MOVES FORWARD]
