Unmarked Graves Found
Columbia, TN: (Apr-04-08) Dr. Tom Moore brought a lawsuit against the city of Columbia, TN, stating that his practice suffered as a result of the closure of an access road from US Highway 31 beside the Greenwood Cemetery. City officials stated that the access was shut after a series of unmarked graves were discovered during the building of an auto parts store. The suit claimed that the move cut access from Highway 31 to his clinic. Moore alleged the change cost him business and decreased his property value. City records show that once the unmarked graves were discovered, the city moved quickly to fence off the area and integrate it with the neighboring cemetery.
Sources stated that the two sides had reached a settlement in the case, in which the city agreed to pay $150,000 to Moore, resolving the road access dispute. The settlement was reached after the city council voted 5-2 to pay the business for damages, though Councilwoman Christa Martin, who joined Councilwoman Sue Stephenson in voting against the settlement, said the city did not intentionally harm Moore's business and even improved an access road to help alleviate matters.
