Congressman's Illegal Recording
Washington, DC: (Apr-04-08) Congressman John Boehner, a Republican from OH, brought charges against Congressman Jim McDermott, a Democratic member of Congress from Washington, alleging that he gave two newspapers an illegally recorded telephone call between Boehner and other GOP officials. In his defense, McDermott stated that he was taking a stand for the First Amendment, though legal counsel for Boehner shot down that stance, stating that being a government official, McDermott used information illegally extracted about another citizen.
As part of a settlement reached in the case, sources stated that McDermott has been ordered to pay a $1 million fine to resolve allegations. Records show that Boehner successfully sued McDermott, and that the Supreme Court has refused to hear McDermott's appeal of the judgment against him. The court is still deliberating on whether Jim McDermott should be asked to resign or be forced out of office. [ONE NEW SNOW: DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKER ORDERED TO PAY REPUBLICAN $1 M SETTLEMENT]
