Wide Spread Air Pollution

Albany, NY: (Apr-08-08) State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo brought charges against American Electric Power Co. over smokestack pollution that drifted across Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States. Court records reveal that the case gained momentum in 1999, after eight states and 13 environmental groups joined the Environmental Protection Agency's crackdown on energy companies. The investigation was over accusations that energy companies rebuilt coal fired power plants without installing pollution controls as required.

Sources close to the case stated that the two sides reached a settlement in the case, in which American Electric Power agreed to pay the eight states $24 million over the next five years for use in energy efficiency and air pollution reduction projects.
