Housing Project Moves Forward
Salinas, CA: (Apr-08-08) Monterey County and HYH Corporation, which has been trying to develop its Rancho San Juan project, have been embroiled in a legal battle over the Butterfly Village housing development north of Salinas, since 1998. Sources close to the case stated that the related parties have agreed to resolve the dispute and have entered into a settlement agreement.
Under the terms of the deal, which came after six months of intense negotiations between supervisors, the developer and project opponents, the corporation will replace the proposed golf course with more than 300 acres of open space and parks, increasing the percentage of affordable housing in the development from 15% to 32%, and adding a 10-acre elementary school. In exchange, Monterey county agreed to pay HYH Corp., about $1 million to compensate the company for years of delays in processing its project application, thereby ending the lawsuit.
