Ferry Captain Black Out
Staten Island, NY: (Apr-09-08) The family of Pio Canini brought a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Staten Island, after the 52-year-old Clifton resident died in the 2003 Staten Island Ferry crash. The family claimed that Canini was killed just a month after he gave away his daughter Tara, at her wedding. Canini was one of 11 people who died when the ferryboat Andrew J. Barberi crashed into a maintenance pier near the St. George Ferry Terminal on Oct. 15, 2003, in what has been termed one of the worst mass-transit disasters in history. The accident occurred as Assistant Capt. Richard Smith, who was at the controls, blacked out. Smith said he was extremely fatigued and on painkillers. City officials claimed that Capt. Michael Gansas was in the other pilothouse on the opposite end of the boat.
As part of a settlement reached, Canini's family received a $1.5 million wrongful death payout with the city, resolving the case. Called a carpenter with hands of gold, Canini was returning home from work in Manhattan when the crash occurred, leaving his family forever bereaved.
