Stealing From Medicare
Portland, ME: (Apr-16-08) The US Attorney's office brought a lawsuit against Goodall Hospital in Sanford, alleging that it overcharged Medicare for certain drugs and services. The federal lawsuit stated that Goodall overcharged the Medicare program in 2003 and 2004, under the hospital's previous management. It alleged that the fraud had been done knowingly; as those managers knew, or should have known, the billing was improper because the billing irregularities had been identified by employees. It accused the hospital of failing to take the necessary corrective action. The hospital agreed to conduct an internal audit that confirmed federal investigators' reports that Goodall had over billed Medicare by $892,854.
Sources stated that in a recent action, the Goodall Hospital has agreed to settle with the government, paying $1,150,000 to satisfy outstanding claims. The US Attorney's office stated that the hospital's current management fully cooperated with the investigation, and worked with the government to resolve the lawsuit.
