Utility Power Exchange
Bonneville, WA: (Apr-16-08) Peninsula Light Co., along with other Northwest public power utilities, brought federal charges against Bonneville Power Administration, alleging that it overcharged the Residential Exchange Program. The suit questioned the manner in which the residential exchange was calculated. Sources stated that the Residential Exchange Program was initiated to provide rate relief to Northwest residential and small-farm consumers who purchase their power from investor-owned utilities. The suit claimed a deviation from the original purpose. The Bonneville Power Administration has allegedly been working with the private and public utilities since then to reach an equitable settlement.
As part of a recent settlement reached between the two parties, sources stated that Peninsula Light Co. has received about $2 million from Bonneville Power Administration, resolving the dispute. City residents said that PenLight is a member-owned cooperative located in Gig Harbor. Records show that the utility began in 1925, and has since grown to be the second-largest cooperative in the Northwest, serving 25,000 members on the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsulas. [$2 MILLION SETTLEMENT WILL DELAY PENLIGHT RATE INCREASE]
