Prison Pregnancy
Richmond, VA: (Apr-21-08) A federal sexual-abuse lawsuit was brought against the city of Richmond by nine former inmates of a state women's prison in Chesterfield County, alleging that they were sexually harassed, which resulted in one of them getting pregnant. The suit claimed that nine women at the 260-inmate prison were forced into sexual acts and were harassed by male and female officers and one teacher between 2003 and 2006. Court records indicated that one of the plaintiffs was Sheron Montrey, a convicted murderer impregnated by a corrections officer in 2005. Sources stated that the officer, Bobby Brown Jr., subsequently was convicted of having sexual relations with an inmate, which is a felony. Montrey gave birth in February 2006.
The plaintiffs alleged that such improper conduct was common, and that when it was brought to the attention of authorities, those making the accusations often were transferred to other prisons. The suit named Tammy Estep, the former superintendent of Pocahontas, and Marilyn Hill, the former chief of security there, as defendants. Both still are employees of the Virginia Department of Corrections. Also named are a half dozen officers and an instructor, most if not all of them no longer state employees. The suit also sought $10 million in damages. Sources close to the case stated that a settlement has been reached in the suit, though details are not being made public.
