Pollution Permits Violations
Columbus, OH: (Apr-22-08) The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency brought charges against the Crawford County Landfill, alleging that it had an air pollution control permit violation at its 5128 Lincoln Highway East facility near Bucyrus. EPA officials stated that as landfills are considered large air pollution sources due to gases produced as waste decomposes; the facility has a federal permit, known as a Title V permit. The permit is apparently valid for five years and must be renewed for the air pollution source to continue operating. Regulations require a permit holder to apply for renewal at least six months before the permit expires.
The suit alleged that the landfill operator, Santek Environmental Inc., failed to apply to renew the permit by its deadline of Nov. 30, 2006. City records show that the landfill is owned by Crawford County. Court sources claimed that Santek submitted the renewal application in April 2007 and received a new permit in February 2008.
As part of a settlement reached by both sides, the Crawford County Landfill will pay an $18,900 civil penalty to resolve allegations. Under the terms of the settlement agreement; the company will pay $15,120 to Ohio EPA's Environmental Education Fund and air pollution control programs. The remaining $3,780 will be paid to Ohio EPA's Clean Diesel School Bus Program. [BUCYRUS TELEGRAPH FORUM: COUNTY LANDFILL FINED $18,900 FOR POLLUTION CONTROL VIOLATION]
