Home Destroyed
Jackson, MS: (Apr-25-08) Norman and Genevieve Broussard, a Biloxi couple, brought a lawsuit against State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. after their Biloxi home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. In a recent development in the case, sources familiar with the negotiations stated that the lawsuit was resolved after the two sides agreed to a settlement.
Court records reveal that a jury awarded $2.5 million in punitive damages to the Broussards in 2007. US District Judge L.T. Senter Jr. later reduced that amount to $1 million. Following that, the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a new trial, stating that Senter shouldn't have allowed jurors to consider punitive damages.
Under the terms of the recent settlement, both sides refused to reveal the details of the deal. State Farm spokesperson Jonathan Freed said the Bloomington, IL, based company is pleased with the settlement. [WLOX NEWS: STATE FARM SETTLES BILOXI KATRINA CASE]
