Judge Causes Crash
Freeport, IL: (Apr-25-08) A civil action was brought against Richard Goldenhersh, an IL, appellate court judge, by Stephen Martin of Rockford, in 2003, after he sustained serious injuries in a crash. Sources stated that the civil action was filed after two appellate court judges were involved in a 2002 vehicle accident near Freeport. The suit initially named Goldenhersh and Appellate Judge James Donovan, both of the Fifth District in IL, as defendants; and court papers reveal that Judge Donovan was dismissed from the lawsuit prior to a settlement being reached.
The suit stated that Goldenhersh was driving the car that allegedly caused a three-vehicle accident on Oct. 7, 2002, near the intersection of US 20 Bypass and River Road outside Freeport, and crashed into Martin and another motorist, Jodee Fluegel of Lena. Donovan owned the 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis that Goldenhersh was driving and was also a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Court papers reveal that Martin and Fluegel filed virtually identical lawsuits, seeking monetary compensation in excess of $100,000.
As part of a settlement reached in the case, Appellate Judge Richard Goldenhersh agreed to pay Martin $2.17 million to resolve the personal injury lawsuit. Fluegel's lawsuit was settled before Martin's was announced, but details of that settlement were not announced. [THE JOURNAL STANDARD: JUDGE SUIT RESOLVED]
