Work at Home Scheme
Miami, FL: (Apr-28-08) The US Federal Trade Commission brought charges against Byron C. Peterson, alleging that he was part of a business that misled consumers with false earnings claims for an envelope-stuffing business opportunity. The suit claimed that Peterson and others operated a business known as Home Business System, where they placed classified ads throughout the nation, including in Spanish-language newspapers. The advertisements stated that participants would earn at least $17.50 per envelope and guaranteed a weekly income of up to $1,400. Reports show that most consumers who paid a $45 registration deposit never heard from the company again. Court records indicate that a federal district court judge halted the operation in August 2007, stating that the defendants' assets be frozen.
Sources stated that as part of a settlement reached in the case, Peterson is barred from making misrepresentations in connection with commerce in any goods or services, including any work-at-home opportunity. Additionally, the federal order imposed a $1,280,612 judgment. It has been announced that the judgment is suspended due to Peterson's inability to pay. The full judgment will be imposed if he is found to have misrepresented his financial condition. [NORTH COUNTRY GAZETTE: MARKETER SETTLES CHARGES IN ENVELOPE STUFFING SCHEME]
