Coal Power Pollution
Milwaukee, WI: (May-01-08) The state attorney general's office brought charges against Wisconsin Power & Light Co., alleging that the utility has been operating its coal-fired power plant in Portage without a permit regulating its air pollution emissions. The suit claimed that Wisconsin Power & Light failed to file its paperwork in a timely manner in 2007, in order to continue operating the plant. The plant operator stated in its defense that the six-weeks-late filing was due to an administrative oversight.
As part of a settlement reached by both sides, sources stated that Wisconsin Power & Light Co. agreed to pay $285,000 to resolve allegations. The Sierra Club, an association that is concerned with coal plant pollution, had raised concerns to state regulators that the old permit was too lax in some respects and was allowing the utility to send more harmful pollutants into the air than it should have. Kevin St. John, spokesman for the state Department of Justice, stated that Wisconsin Power & Light already has filed all of its permit documents with the state, and a new permit is pending from the state Department of Natural Resources.
