Sued For Promotion
Texas City, TX: (May-05-08) Steve Cooley, the president of the Texas City firefighters' union, brought charges against the city, seeking a promotion and back pay. The suit, filed in 2006, claimed that the city passed over Cooley for promotion because of his union activities. In its defense, the city said that it denied Cooley the promotion as he lacked leadership ability and had a bad attitude. Cooley's lawyers provided testimonies from co-workers, supervisors and subordinates of Cooley, who stated to the contrary.
As part of a settlement reached, the city agreed to promote Cooley to captain and pay him $91,400 in damages and fees. City sources stated that the settlement resolves one of two lawsuits involving claims of discrimination and retaliation. In the other, a church has sued the city, alleging a violation of due process rights because the city threatened to shut it down if it didn't install a sprinkler system.
