24 Innocent Years
Tallahassee, FL: (May-06-08) Alan Crotzer brought a lawsuit against the state, alleging that he wrongly spent 24 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Sources stated that the diminutive man, who suffered such injustice, has come out, not just with his spirit intact, but expanded. Court papers reveal that Crotzer was convicted of kidnapping, rape and robbery in 1982 and sentenced to 130 years behind bars. Twenty-four years after that, DNA evidence proved Crotzer's innocence, and in January 2006, Crotzer was exonerated of the crimes.
Legal sources said that his lawyers wanted a compensation for the man who lost most of his youth, which saw the emergence of cell phones, laptop computers and satellite television, all of which were alien to the 47-year-old who was just 21 when he was convicted. As part of a settlement reached between the man and the state, sources familiar with the suit said that the state agreed to pay a $1.25 million settlement to resolve the case. The state's Chief Financial Officer recently gave Crotzer an up-front payment of $250,000 and monthly payments of $6,700 for the next 20 years.
