Officer Beats Straphanger
Brooklyn, NY: (May-06-08) Mitchi Cunningham, a Brooklyn straphanger, brought a lawsuit against the city, alleging that he suffered severe injuries after he was beaten by a cop on a city train. Reports of the incident show that Cunningham and two friends were heading home after seeing a movie, when one of the friends were told by the train's motorman to put out a cigarette. The trio walked through the cars to the back of the train, where the two friends started rapping.
Court documents reveal that Officer Marcus Rollins then boarded the car and ordered the three to get off the train. The confrontation took place when the group refused to leave the station and were pepper-sprayed by Rollins. Cunningham stated that he had retreated by then, but he was attacked when he returned to ask Rollins for his badge number. Sources stated that as a result of the beating, Cunningham underwent neurosurgery to relieve swelling inside his skull. He also suffered permanent loss of his sense of smell as a result of the clubbing.
As part of a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay $1 million to resolve the personal injury claim. The two friends, Marcus Copeland and Johnel Jamison will each receive $30,000 under the settlement. [NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: $1M FOR STRAPHANGER WHACKED BY COP]
