Amusement Tax
Rosemont, IL: (May-07-08) Cook County brought charges against Rosemont, accusing the village of breaking the law, stating that the village owed it $13 million. The suit stated that in 1997, Cook County enacted its amusement tax, which varies according to the event. The tax is said to affect events at the village-run Allstate Arena and Rosemont Theater. Rosemont refused to collect the tax, claiming that the county had no right to force a municipality to collect an extra tax. Court papers show that following a judge's order in 2005, Rosemont finally agreed to begin collecting the county's tax for sporting events, concerts and other entertainment at its venues.
As part of a settlement reached in the dispute, sources stated that Rosemont agreed to pay over $4.28 million to Cook County to resolve the long-running dispute over the county's amusement tax. Additionally, the village also agreed to pay for police patrol, trash pickup and snow removal on forest preserve land from Devon Avenue to Lawrence Avenue, and from River Road to East River Road.
